HOW TO PROPERLY PREPARE A MOBILE HOME FOR THE WINTER SEASON: TIPS AND RECOMMENDATIONS.
Preparing a mobile home for the winter season is important to ensure comfort, safety, and protection of the mobile home from damage caused by frost or harsh weather conditions. Here are several recommendations:
1. Insulation, sealing, windows, and doors.
• Check windows and doors: make sure windows and doors are properly adjusted. If necessary, adjust them using the instructions provided when the home was handed over.
• Check insulation: verify that the walls, roof, and floor are intact and prevent heat loss.
2. Securing the water connection and pipes.
• Use heating cables: for critical sections of the water supply, consider using heating cables to keep temperatures above freezing.
• Insulate the water connection: if the water supply is exposed to frost, wrap it with insulation approximately 5 mm thick (e.g. Isover Orstech LSP).
• Drain unused pipes: if certain pipes will not be used, drain the water to prevent freezing.
3. Heating system check.
• Heating inspection: make sure your heating system is fully functional.
• Alternative heat sources: have backup heating available (e.g. a fireplace) in case of a power outage.
4. Roof and drainage.
• Check the roof: ensure the roof is undamaged and resistant to snow and rain.
• Clean gutters and downspouts: make sure water can drain freely and does not freeze inside.
5. Energy efficiency.
• Use a thermostat: a programmable thermostat helps optimize heating and save energy.
• Consider additional heating: hot-air fans, air conditioning, or even rugs can increase thermal comfort inside the mobile home.
6. Exterior preparation.
• Protect the underside of the home: ensure the bottom of the mobile home is covered (so-called “skirting”) to minimize cold air penetration.
• Secure tanks: if you have water tanks or a septic system, make sure they are protected from frost.
7. Ventilation and humidity.
• Ventilation control: ensure proper ventilation to prevent condensation.
• Use heat recovery ventilation: especially during damp winter weather, it is highly beneficial to use heat recovery ventilation. If your home does not have it, use a dehumidifier to maintain optimal indoor humidity.
8. Emergency preparedness.
• Have backup power sources available: a portable generator can be useful during power outages.
Regular inspection and maintenance of your mobile home during winter will help prevent issues and keep your home warm and comfortable.
